How long does dental implant treatment take?
If it is necessary to provide enough bone volume before dental implant process by bone grafting; it takes about 6 to 9 months to prepare a suitable bone bed for dental implant. If bone graft and dental implants are done simultaneously; then, it takes 4 to 9 months to complete the treatment.
It takes one and a half to 3 months from inserting dental implant to inserting prosthesis. This time duration is necessary for creating a stable connection between dental implant jaw bones. Healing time depends on the bone quality and it usually takes 3 to 6 months.
Due to the better bone quality in lower jaw; it takes 3 to 4 months for lower jaw and it takes 4 to 6 months in upper jaw. Then, dentist can start prosthesis insertion procedure. Prosthesis stage includes molding, selecting color and crown size. Patient and dentist make jointly decisions about these matters.
When the bone density is high, dental implant is inserted within the bone with higher pressure and strength so; inserting the prosthesis on it will take shorter time. In these cases, dentist can install temporary dental implant in a shorter period. If the loading force and/or bone density around dental implant are low; it takes 1 to 6 months for placing prosthesis.
Based on the above mentioned explanations; we can conclude that dental implant treatment takes several months. During this time, dentist can offer temporary dental prosthesis based on dental implant type and/or bone quality and quantity to keep the patient’s appearance and beauty.
Surgery and inserting dental implant take 30 to 120 minutes. This time is directly related to the number of implants and patient’s oral condition. It is obvious that this time will increase when we need to change some conditions such as some changes in sinus cavity in upper jaw bone.
