They found that these patients were significantly more susceptible to poor oral hygiene, swelling, and gum infection than the control group. In addition, periodic epileptic seizures need to pay more attention to the health of the teeth and the quality of health of this part of their body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every 2 American adults over 30 has periodontal disease. They need gum surgery to treat their periodontal disease.

The World Health Institute estimates that the acute type of these diseases that cause tooth loss is found in 15 to 20 percent of middle-aged people. According to the CDC, in the United States alone, 2.3 million adults and 467711 children suffer from epilepsy, with about 150,000 new cases reported each year.

The study, entitled "The Relationship between Periodontal Disease and the Severity of Attacks in Epileptic Patients," was published in the European Journal of Epilepsy.

The research is the result of a collaborative effort by researchers at the University of Sao Paulo City and Campinas University.
