Dental implant is one of the best solutions for toothless problem. Patients who have lost one or some teeth but using dentures is very hard for them can choose dental implant treatment.
The first stage for dental implant treatment is dentist examinations. A professional dentist can plan for dental implant treatment by a correct diagnosis and general condition control and considering patient’s oral health. The dentist may order for radiography, if necessary, diagnose implant areas easier.
The next step in one-stage dental implant is preparing selected implant based on the suitable type, quality and price for patient. Then, dental implant is inserted in patient’s jaw bone. It has no side effects or complications for patients.
The dentist considers a rest period for the patient. This time is for creating correct connection between the implant and jaw bone. In this stage, the patient is toothless but he/she can use temporary prosthesis for preserving aesthetic aspects. Obviously, this has a separate cost for the patient.
In the next stage, the site is prepared for inserting dental prosthesis on the dental implant. The dentist should prepare a mold of patient’s teeth. At this point, dental implant has been inserted in patient’s jaw bone and preparing mold is done based on the prosthesis.
The main duty of this prosthesis is creating a stable and strong structure instead of lost teeth. The most important advantage of them is related to aesthetic aspects. The patient can select the color of prosthesis for inserting on the implant but the color harmony between the prosthesis and natural teeth of the patient is one of the duties of the dentist.
These prostheses are also called veneer. They are mainly used as a cover for damaged teeth because of tooth decay or thinned wall teeth or broken teeth. In fact, restoration operation is due to this prosthesis. The crowns that are used in Iran market and are compatible with other natural teeth are porcelain or zirconia crowns.
Implant crown is made in laboratory for 2-stage dental implant. The crown is inserted on the abatement (one of the implant components) by the dentist. At this point, the patient is asked to control the color and comfort of the prosthesis. It will be used as permanent crown, if the patient is satisfied of it.
It is necessary to observe all oral health points for dental implant similar to natural tooth to improve dental implant lifespan. It is recommended to avoid chewing hard or harmful foods. Using regular mouthwash and floss is necessary.
Dental implant in growing children needs prosthesis restoration in toothless areas. Trauma and hypodontia are the common anomalies causing congenital edentulous. Usual treatment for such patients before completion of bone and teeth growth is removable prosthesis. However, alveolar bone depletion and some periodontal and secondary tooth decay are the main problems for such patients because of using removable prosthesis.
Patients who had radiotherapy are not suitable candidates for dental implant. They have to refer to special dentistry centers with enough experiments in such cases. It has been recommended for these patients to have dental implant with 1 year delay but there are some earlier methods in some private centers with good results. The expected success for these patients is about 10% less than the patients without any history of radiotherapy. On the other hand, it is not necessary for patients with dental implant to remove the implant before radiotherapy if osteo-integration process is completed.
Dental implant methods In dental implant treatment plan; it is necessary to consider several factors such as relationship between the team members and their collaboration, choosing the right patient, precise planning for implant treatment, implant quantity, implant location, implant diameter and height, necessity of surgery, preparation of bone and oral soft tissue before main surgery, determining the best prosthesis for implant and coordinating all the above mentioned steps with technicians.
It is possible to insert extra implants for immediate loading implants with fixed prosthesis, so that the patient enjoys dental prosthesis while initial implants are healing. At the present time, it is necessary to have at least 4 implants in lower jaw and 5 to 8 implants in upper jaw for this reason.
